RSS Bandit v1.8.0.870 Release

Wednesday, November 12 2008; by dareo - Release Notes

The recent releases of RSS Bandit (v1.8.0.855 and v1.8.0.862) contained a bug which caused users to lose their feed lists on upgrading. In addition, there were some user interface changes that made it look like feed subscriptions were missing when they were in fact there. This version fixes both of these issues.

Please download it from http://downloads.sourceforge.net/rssbandit/RssBandit1.8.0.870_installer.zip

Fixed now - one happy Bandit again !

When I install this version it tells me:

"The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable."

And it has a browse path to

C:\Documents and Settings\cmcrae\Local Settings\Temp\wz7ab0\

This has not happened with any previous version of the installers and I've been using RSS Bandit for a few years.

#3 dareo on 11.12.2008 at 8:10 PM

Cris McRae,

You should unzip the folder and place the installer on your desktop before trying to run it.

First of all Dareo tnx for all you effort to make all of RSSBandit users happy. But new version 1.8.0.870 still has two bugs:

* for remote storage I use FTP service. When I upload RSSBandit state to FTP everything works fine. But when I try to download RSSBandit state I got error „Feedlist download failed with error: Closed ..“

* I define custom formatter Outlook-express. But when I read articles using Search Folder on preview pane default Outlook2003-orange is applied.

Thanks for the update. Seems to be working better for me.

#6 Cris McRae on 11.12.2008 at 10:55 PM

I'm not installing from within WinZip. Both the setup.exe and .msi file are in a folder, and I have tried using both the setup.exe and the .msi file. Same results. Something is missing.

#7 Cris McRae on 11.12.2008 at 10:56 PM

Great... Something else is wrong... I get the same problem when I try to uninstall the old version.

#8 Cris McRae on 11.12.2008 at 11:02 PM

When I copy the two files into the temp folder referenced above, and browse to it from the error popup, I get this error now:

The file "C:\Documents and Settings\cmcrae\Local Settings\Temp\wz7ab0\RssBandit Installer.msi' is not a valid installation package for the product RssBandit.

#9 Cris McRae on 11.12.2008 at 11:18 PM

I fixed the problem... Not sure why it happened in the first place. I had to use the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility to remove RssBandit installation files and then re-installed without any issues.

NOT fixed for me. All feeds are still gone. What shoudl I do?

#11 LarryA on 11.13.2008 at 3:30 PM

Thank goodness! I was getting desperate. Everything seems to be back now.

#12 dareo on 11.13.2008 at 7:59 PM

ppit,

Are your subscriptions actually in either the subscriptions.xml or DirectAccess.<id>.subscription file?

#13 ppit on 11.14.2008 at 6:09 AM

Well, I am not familiar with the RSSBandit database structure.

I have both files, subscriptions.xml (3.6MB) and DirectAccess.<id>.subscription file (205Bytes).

#14 Apo on 11.14.2008 at 5:22 PM

Thanks! Works beautifully!

#15 Dominic Sayers on 11.18.2008 at 11:47 AM

Just upgraded from a recent but pre-1.8 version to 1.8.0.870 and all my subscriptions have gone.

Where do I look for the files you mentioned in your reply to ppit?

#16 Dominic Sayers on 11.18.2008 at 3:03 PM

Trying the remedy suggested by Ariel Popovsky here: rssbandit.org/.../missing-feeds-i

#17 Dominic Sayers on 11.18.2008 at 3:50 PM

No, that didn't work for me. Unfortunately I have now lost all the updates to my feed list since the last time I saved it in September. I'm very disappointed to say the least.

I appreciate this is free software and I want to thank you for the time you have put into it. However, I don't think I can use the current version of RSS Bandit. Unless you can make available a recent working version I will have to look for another news aggregator. Does anybody have any suggestions?

#18 Dominic Sayers on 11.18.2008 at 4:24 PM

Just FYI, my up-to-date subscription list seems to be in subscriptions.xml but RSS Bandit 1.8.0.870 doesn't seem to use it.

#19 Dominic Sayers on 11.18.2008 at 4:37 PM

Me again. Just to say that renaming subscriptions.xml to DirectAccess.xxxxx.subscription seemed to do the trick.

I am still looking for another aggregator because of other issues, but that is a matter for another thread.

Dare,

.870 has fixed my disappearing feed problems.

Thanks

The latest version is working well for me. The number of unread items shown in "My Feeds" finally matches the number of items in the Unread Items folder. Thanks for that! I finally have confidence that I'm catching all the unread items. Overall the program has a more finished feel. Again thanks!

The only issue I have is with the category column layout. I lost my layout when upgrading (fair enough.) Unfortunately, any saved layout seems to constantly get lost, reverting to the default. (When saving a layout, columns and sort order, does it matter if the current category is a main category or sub-category?)

I also have a feature request for the next version: a separate download manager. I can't remember how many times I've closed RSS Bandit while an attachment download was in progress. It would be nice if RSS Bandit had a separate download manager similar to the one in FireFox.

Keep up the good work!

#22 ppit on 11.20.2008 at 2:17 PM

I would like to make the test renaming subscriptions.xml to DirectAccess.xxxxx.subscription

But when I rename, I cannot get rid of the .xml extension, so I end up with DirectAccess.xxxxx.subscription.xml. Which gives an error when RSSBandit is launched.

How can I get rid of the .xml extension in DirectAccess.xxxxx.subscription.xml ?

See www.fileinfo.net/.../windows-show-ex

#24 ppit on 11.21.2008 at 12:43 AM

Thanks, this made the trick. I got my feeds back now.

#25 torstenr on 11.22.2008 at 7:58 PM

Ray: it should not matter if you close bandit while a download is in progress: it should continue with the next bits to download next time you start bandit again (OK, it gets not finished in the meantime, but it should not start from the beginning again...)
